I'm looking after a 5 months old setter puppy. Just to give some context, the owners been funny with my rates since I had her (2 months). I charge slightly less than London living wage for walks and a reasonable £35 for 9 hour day care at mine. The owner hasn't been in the country for 10 years prior to coming back this summer, so I don't think she understands the current economical climate. In the beginning

she's tried to take advantage of my services by trying to negotiate my already low price. Also- she's a doctor in Mayfair. So she really isn't short of money. This owner is always late. Usually by 1-2 hours and only lets me know on the day- and she never apologises. I've always let her off but I'm really feeling the urge to say something today

as I'm actively having to delay my evening plans today because of her super last minute notice to say she'll be turning up 2 hours late because she wants to grab dinner beforehand. Am I right to charge extra amount (thinking £5 per hour) in instances like these? I made it very clear from the beginning that I cover up to 9

hours. I even meet her half way for pickup/ drop offs (again- I usually accept these from my home only) because she's too lazy to make a 5 minute detour from the station she gets off at.

enlitenme 3 days ago Yup! I didn't take it seriously the first time my doggy daycare guy said after 10 minutes late it's a $5 charge. Once I helped work it I realized how much time he spends waiting on people in frustration. My daycare here is $7/hour.

You need to be far more firm in your boundaries with opening hours. Obviously emergencies happen, but if it's consistent, drop them as a client or charge significantly more. 107 Reply Share

ZenBourbon edited 2 days ago 2 days ago. Late/rush fees should always be set high enough that you're delighted by late customers. Google says the average doctor makes £30.23 per hour while the average wage is £17.48 per hour.

I'd start at £60/hr late fee in 15 minute increments, with the option to schedule longer stays at a reasonable rate. The fee can always be waived for typically good customers. Reply Share 37

chaiosi 3 days ago Wow only $5! My daycare costs 25 after 10 minutes late and after an hour late they keep your dog overnight and charge the overnight boarding rate (just shy of 50) plus the 25 and you can't get your dog until morning 43 Reply Share

chose it. I heard it averages high in the states! I agree it's low though, so I'm thinking about raising it. 27 Reply Share

OrganoMegaly. 3 days ago I'm in London (Camden) and would be looking at £50/day if I sent my dog to boarding (I don't, we have a walker). £35 is cheap. (Also, as a doctor too, we are on strike over low pay so she may not be loaded haha)

Tess-Dubois 3 days ago Make sure you charge for any "part" of the late hour. I used to do childcare and would charge £5 per 15 mins or any part thereof. So 16 mins late meant £10. You have your own life to lead. She should value your time not waste it. Make sure she pays up on the day or refuse further service.

get hungry and unruly (daycare does not feed meals). I don't complain about the extra charge on long days and the rates encourage me to pick up sooner. 21 Reply Share
